GRANT OPPORTUNITIES

The City of Durango is offering two new grants for the North Main and Camino Del Rio Character Districts. The goal is to enhance these districts and create a vibrant commercial corridor that provides the community and visitors with products, services and social and cultural opportunities. These grants will result in a high concentration of improvements and activity over a relatively short time period. This will draw attention to the area and create a momentum that attracts businesses and customers. The ultimate goal is to support local businesses and increase community amenities while creating a strong commercial corridor and tax base. On average these two districts have over 30,000 cars pass by daily.  This is a great opportunity to grab people’s attention and invite them to slow down, take a closer look and eventually park their car and explore.

The RE:NEW Grant is a 1:1 matching grant for property improvements that are visible form the public right of way.  www.durangogov.org/DocumentCenter/View/9473

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: RE:NEW Grant for Underground Bike Works

The City of Durango recently approved the first RE:NEW Grant for Underground Bike Works, located at 3062 Main Avenue.  The property is located in the North Main Character District area and is in need of landscaping and facade improvements. On March 14, 2018, the City’s Design Review Board (DRB) approved the property owner/business owner’s request for $5,000 in matching grant funding to help with these improvements.  For more information on the RE:NEW Grant program, visit www.durangogov.org/DocumentCenter/View/9473

HIGHWAY 550/160 MEDIAN COMMUNITY ART PROJECT

Bryce Pettit and Allison Smith will be holding workshops for Community Members to contribute to the 550/160 median project. Attendants will discuss what makes Durango special, learn how to turn ideas into simple drawings, and then create a stamp with a linocutting technique that can be used to create single or patterned prints. While great for most ages, this class will be using tools with a blade and adults may need to assist children under 12. The class will be using permanent ink, so please wear art-making clothes. The project will take about an hour, drop in any time from 10:00 to 2:00. Please note this is first come first serve, with 20 spaces available at a time. Upcoming workshops will be held on:

Saturday, May 19th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Durango Rec Center

and

Saturday, June 9th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Durango Library

SIGN CODE UPDATE

The City of Durango is updating the 1989 sign code. This update was triggered by a Supreme Court ruling that requires sign codes to be content neutral. As we go through the process of updating the sign code to comply with the recent Supreme Court ruling, we will also reassess current standards such as setbacks, sign limits, A-frame signs, temporary signs, etc., for both commercial and residential properties. Public input will be vital to our decision making, so please plan on attending the open house:
