Winter weather in December allowed Durango Parks and Recreation to partner with Durango Fire Protection District and the Colorado Division of of Fire Prevention and Control to conduct slash pile burning in Dalla Mountain Park.
The City of Durango and its partner HomesFund held a lottery in December to choose potential homebuyers for four deed-restricted townhomes at the Animas Park Overlook townhomes currently in development.
The City of Durango has created a webpage to inform businesses and customers about the details of Colorado’s Plastic Pollution Reduction Act, set to go into effect Jan. 1, 2023. Colorado’s Plastic Pollution Reduction Act (House Bill 21-1162) requires certain retail stores to charge a $0.10 fee on all single-use carryout bags, both paper and plastic.
On Dec. 16, Public Works received a call from Animal Patrol Officer Sydney Walters requesting assistance with a kitten reported hiding at the bottom of a storm in the Three Springs area. James Hobby and Brandon Lucero of Utilities happened to be in the area and stopped to assist, James and Brandon opened two manhole covers on either side of the street, climbed in, and James was able to grab the kitten resulting in it safely being transported to the humane society to be checked out and cleaned up.
This December the Durango Police Department once again participated in the Shop with a Cop program. Officers went shopping with 135 local kids at Walmart in an effort to provide the children with gifts and goodies to brighten up their holiday experience. The Durango Police department has participated in Shop with a Cop for over 30 years.
City Hall celebrates 59 years of council meetings this December, with the first council meeting being held on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 1963. That accounts for approximately 1,400 city council meetings over the years.
