- Chapman Hill finished its roller rink season on Sept. 9 with a roller disco. While we're all sad that summer roller skating has ended, the community can now get excited for the upcoming ice skating season.

- Another sign summer has come to an end is the closure of the Wibit play area at Lake Night Horse for the season. For the second year in a row, kids and the young at heart had a fun summer navigating the inflatable obstacle course.

- Durango City Council confirmed the appointment of Erin Hyder as assistant city manager after an extensive interview process conducted by a committee comprising Durango residents Mike French, Suzy Phare, and Durango City Manager José Madrigal.
- Durango City Council regular meetings and study sessions can now be viewed live on the city's YouTube channel. City Council meetings are typically the first and third Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. Study Sessions are the same day starting at 2:15 p.m.

- Durango - La Plata County Airport runway repaving project that stopped air traffic for 10 days in September has been completed. Runway 3/21 at DRO is a 9,201’ x 150’ asphalt surface that had not been substantially rehabilitated in over 15 years. During the ten-day closure, the runway’s 1.38 million square foot surface was completely repaved. Work also included new runway paint markings, re-paved taxiway connector asphalt, and an all-new LED runway edge lighting system.

- The City of Durango and La Plata County are once again hosting a free household hazardous waste collections event on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 23 and 24, at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave. in Durango.
|

- The annual audit of the city’s financial statements has been completed by an external agency and is now available for public review.
The city requires an independent audit of its annual comprehensive financial report prior to its release. This is a best practice that meets the requirements of the Colorado Statutes and Open Records Act, the city’s strategic goal of financial excellence, and the public’s interest in having an external review of the city’s financial statements created by staff.

- The second public meeting to receive feedback on parking priorities for Durango was held on Sept. 13. The meeting took a look at the city’s development of a Comprehensive Parking Master Plan, using the parking study's initial survey. A second survey is now available at the City of Durango's Parking website.

- In addition to the Durango Police Department celebrating National Police Woman Day on Sept. 12, Chief Bob Brammer signed a "30x30" pledge, which means the department will work toward having a 30% female staff by 2030.

This September 13, Durango celebrated its 142nd birthday. This clipping from the Durango Herald on Sept. 13, 1962 congratulates the city on its 82nd birthday. The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Company formed Durango along the Animas River in September 1880 to serve the San Juan mining district.
