Bicycle events for area students planned

2023 Multimodal Safe Routes to School

Durango, CO: The city and Durango School District 9-R are hosting various Safe Routes to School events for local students on Wednesdays in the coming weeks before the chilly weather sets in.

  • Wednesday, Sept. 27: Durango Police Department, Durango DEVO, and Grey Matters are partnering up for a bike rodeo at Park Elementary. The bike rodeo will teach students the importance of safety while having fun on a bike. Students are encouraged to bring a bike and helmet to school that day.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 4: National Bike to School Day. Durango High School’s Green Team is planning a Bike to School week October 2 - 6. Students who take the pledge to walk or ride to school for the whole week will be entered into a raffle to win prizes.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 11: The City of Durango is hosting a Walk and Roll to School Day with Riverview Elementary School. The event encourages elementary aged students to walk, scoot, skate, bike, bus or carpool to school. Students, parents, and teachers will meet at Memorial Park at 7:20 a.m. and walk or ride to school at 7:30 a.m. Parents and community members are encouraged to come out and cheer on the students as they make their way up 29th street to Riverview.

“The walk and ride to school events is a way to show students how easy and fun it can be,” said Multimodal Specialist Courtney Child, “and the bike rodeo will teach students life-long bike safety skills.” Safe Routes to School events highlight the benefits of walking and biking to school, which include, increasing physical activity and health, raising awareness of how walkable and bikeable our community is, socializing with friends, relieving traffic congestion which in turn will improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
