City begins design on ADA improvements along north Main Avenue

ADATransit

Durango, CO:  The City of Durango has contracted and begun design work to improve ADA compliance and accessibility along the US Hwy 550 (north Main Avenue) corridor between 17th Street and Animas View Drive.

This project will design sidewalk improvements adjacent to transit stops, accessibility improvements of transit stops, include upgrades to existing curb ramps, and will install new ADA-compliant curb ramps as necessary.

It is anticipated that design will be completed in 2024 and construction will start soon thereafter.

ADA projectThe design phase of this project will consist of surveying the north Main Avenue corridor, creating an inventory of existing conditions, meeting with adjacent property and business owners, and designing improvements.

Project improvements will address deficiencies at approximately 17 transit stops identified in the 2016 ADA Transition Plan and improve accessibility along north Main Avenue to and from those transit stops. Transit stop improvements will include transit shelters, expanded landing pads, benches, lighting, and bike racks where possible.

“This project will make much needed accessibility improvements along the north main corridor, which is Durango’s highest-used transit route, the Main Avenue trolley,” said Devin King, multimodal manager. “We’ve heard community voices requesting these improvements for years and it’s great to finally get out there and start designing improvements.”

The project is starting with corridor surveying and work on environmental clearances. The first public meeting is anticipated in late fall of 2023.  It is anticipated that design will be completed in 2024 and construction will start soon thereafter.

Funding for this project is from the Colorado Department of Transportation through two Senate Bill fundings, SB 260 and SB 267. This funding will pay for $4,500,000 of design and construction, with a remaining $1,125,000 of matching funds dedicated from the 2015 Half Cent Sales and Use Tax Fund.
