Durango, CO: The potential relocation of city offices to the former Durango School District 9-R administration property, which could include community space at a new civic center, will be discussed March 14 from 5:30-7 p.m. at City Hall, 949 East Second Ave.
The city is considering moving various departments to the buildings located at 201 E. 12th St. and 215 E. 12th St., which are currently used for school district administration staff and Big Picture High School. Big Picture is moving to the Durango Tech Center and will be open for the 2023-2024 school year at its new location. The school district is assessing its options for staff at the former administration building. One option that the city and the district have discussed is possibly trading the Carnegie Building at 1188 East Second Ave. for Buckley Park, which will allow the school district to move its staff to Carnegie and preserve the park for public use, but no plans have been finalized. The Durango Fire Protection District owns the 9-R property, but the school district owns Buckley Park, which is leased to the city.
The meeting March 14 is an initial meeting to inform and gain feedback from the public on the city’s current steps to explore the feasibility of these various relocations. In addition to moving city staff from Carnegie to a new City Civic Center, city employees from City Hall, River City Hall and the Police Department could also be relocated. The vision is to improve city operations in an updated and consolidated facility, as well as incorporating community uses.
The public is invited to attend the meeting to learn more about the feasibility evaluation and share questions or comments on the proposal. For more information go to the city's webpage with background on the project.
