Durango has been selected to host the 2022 BMX State Championships August 20 and 21. Durango BMX was the No. 1 track in Colorado for 2021, so it was picked to host the 2022 championship. There are 14 tracks in Colorado and because Durango had the largest number of racers in 2021, it was picked to host.

“We have a strong BMX community in Durango and we are all excited to be given the honor of hosting the State Championship,” said Jordan Rupe, Recreation Supervisor.

The Championship is expected to draw approximately 400 racers and more than 1,000 people to Durango for the weekend.

Saturday, Aug. 20 is the state pre-race. Race registration is from 1 to 3 p.m. with the race following registration. Sunday, Aug. 21, will be the state championship with race registration between 8:30 and 10 a.m. with racing to follow.

The Championship will be integrated with a unique race event known as the ProAm, which races professional racers and top amateur riders for a chance to win large cash prizes. This event is sponsored by Tangent and known as the Tangent ProAm. The national series travels across the country and draws high level pros and amateurs alike.

“A Tangent ProAm race will be run every hour throughout the day and will be very exciting to watch,” Rupe said.

There is no cost to watching the races and the pro-level cyclists will be signing autographs. Food will also be available on site.
