[ARCHIVED] Interactive storywalk installed at Durango Public Library

A stanchion with the cover page of "Hike"

The Durango Public Library, in partnership with the Creative Economy Commission and Durango Creative District, are excited to announce the installation of Durango’s first ever storywalk located on the grounds of the library.

The storywalk is a fun, educational activity that places a children’s story, page-by-page, along an outdoor route leading to the front doors of the Durango Public Library. Twenty beautiful wooden stanchions were custom built for the project by Zwisler’s Fine Woodworking in Bayfield. The stanchions have a protective fiberglass covering allowing readers to enjoy the storywalk year-round.

The first book featured in the storywalk is “Hike” by Pete Oswald, a wordless picture book that celebrates exploring outside with family. Stories will be rotated throughout the year. Each stanchion will soon include Braille and Spanish translations.

"It's great to see little ones and their grown-ups exploring the storywalk together," said Colleen Galvin, assistant library director. "And the end of the story leads people right to our front door where they can find even more stories to share!"

The storywalk begins at the corner of East 20th Street and East 3rd Avenue, where it takes readers south along East 3rd Avenue finally bending east along East 19th Street ending right at the main doors of the library. Community members are encouraged to visit and enjoy Durango’s first storywalk!
