The City of Durango, as part of the public engagement process for Downtown’s Next Step, is hosting a virtual community meeting Wednesday, Feb. 16 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The public will have the opportunity to provide feedback on four design concepts for Downtown Main Avenue at the meeting and via an online questionnaire available Feb. 18.

Downtown’s Next Step is an effort to shape a renewed vision for the streetscape and public spaces along Main Avenue between 5th and 14th streets, including patios, sidewalks, street trees and other landscaping, bicycle facilities, vehicle lanes and parking crosswalks.

The design concepts that will be presented at the meeting were developed based on community feedback via a questionnaire Dec. 16 through Jan. 7. The project team used the questionnaire results and discussions with a stakeholder group to form a vision statement and designs for Downtown Main Avenue.

“We were pleased to have such a large response to the first questionnaire,” said Savannah Lytle, planner with the City of Durango. “It’s clear our community has a deep connection to downtown Durango and we hope residents continue to engage in this process to plan thriving, inclusive and accessible spaces on Downtown Main Avenue.”

Community members are invited to fill out a second online questionnaire regarding the design concepts starting Friday, Feb. 18. Please visit DurangoGov.org/DowntownMain for links to the virtual community meeting and online questionnaire.

The project team will use feedback and results of the community meeting and second questionnaire to create a preferred conceptual design for Downtown Main Avenue. The design will be applied to the corridor with each block customized to the surrounding context. The community will be asked for feedback on the preferred design in late March.
