[ARCHIVED] City Council hears water line repair update

Council Meeting Summary Graphic

The Durango City Council met in an all-virtual format Tuesday. Councilors were updated on the water main repairs and possible building code changes that will be presented for public hearings later this month. See meeting highlights in our latest episode of Council Connection.

First, counselors heard from Allison Baker, the Director of Public Works, about repairs on the water supply line that supplies water to the Water Treatment Plant from the Florida River. The line broke in late December and water was pumped to the plant from the Animas River while repairs were being made.

Baker told councilors that repairs proved to be difficult at the time because the water line was built in the 1950s and ground-penetrating radar needed to locate the line. Repairs were made by late January. However, it will need to be re-lined, perhaps as soon as later this year to prevent future breaks.

Next, there was a preview of a planned update in Community Development, from the 2015 to the 2018 International Building Codes, which will be subject to a public hearing before council on Feb. 15. The 2018 codes address plumbing, fire, energy conservation and other aspects of local construction.

The council also introduced an ordinance approving amendments to the Land Use and Development Code for commercial parking, to allow for outside patios for restaurants utilizing some of a business’s assigned parking.

The next City Council study session will be Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 2:15 p.m., followed by the next regular council meeting at 5:30 p.m. Find meeting agendas at DurangoGov.org/Meetings
