The city of Durango has begun the design process for the Camino Crossing Design Project. This project is identified in the 2016 Multimodal Transportation Plan to address a lack of a safe pedestrian and bicyclist connection to downtown Durango from the Animas River Trail.
The project will involve designing an underpass below Camino del Rio near 12th Street and connecting to the Animas River Trail. A feasibility study in 2020 determined 12th Street to be the best location for the project.
“The need for a safe crossing has been talked about by community members for over a decade, and a lot of residents are excited to see this project moving forward to the design phase,” said Devin King, multimodal administrator. “This project will both encourage and improve residents’ and visitors’ access to downtown and the Animas River Trail, two of the city’s best gems.”
The design phase of the project is anticipated to be complete by the fall of 2022. The process will include several opportunities for community input, including a design charrette – a brainstorming workshop for community stakeholders and advisory boards – and two public meetings. More information about meetings will be provided when available.
Funding for this design project comes from the 2015 Half Cent Sales and Use Tax. For more information, call (970) 375-4955 or visit DurangoGov.org/Projects
