The City of Durango has launched an online financial transparency portal that allows the public to check the status of the city’s finances 24/7. The online budget program, through OpenGov, improves financial transparency and allows residents to view revenues, expenditures, project budgets and department budgets. It also helps city employees collaborate on project and department budget planning.
“Financial excellence and transparency is a strategic goal for the city of Durango and OpenGov is a giant step in that direction,” said Cynthia Sneed, Durango finance director. “We are very happy to provide an online 24/7 platform for our community to be able to review updated and timely information on the city’s finances and allow them to dive into individual department expenditures, check register, or project budgets.”.
Links to the city’s existing finances and the proposed 2022 budget are available at DurangoGov.org/Budget. The proposed 2022 budget was released Friday, Oct. 1, and will be presented to Durango City Council at the budget workshop Oct. 8. City Council will hold a budget hearing in November and will approve the budget in December.
“OpenGov enables greater clarity and collaboration and is easy to understand and use. It helps the Financial Services Department communicate to community members and City Council where we stand financially at any given moment,” Sneed said.
The interactive graphs and charts help tell Durango’s budget story and are continually updated with data throughout the budget cycle. Historical budget data can also easily be accessed.
OpenGov Budgeting and Planning streamlines the budgeting and planning process by:
- Allowing staff to review and approve department budget proposals from a single portal.
- Making it easier and faster for staff to build and print online budget books, while preserving institutional knowledge and access to historical data.
- Allowing staff and citizens access to current, historical and proposed budget information with data dashboards and easy-to-understand graphs and tables.
