CR 250 & 251 Improvement Project

Picture1

The City of Durango, with funding support from La Plata County, issued a contract with Bohannan Huston of Englewood Colorado to complete engineered design improvements for the reconstruction of E. 32nd St. (County Road 251) and County Road 250.

The design project begins at Holly Avenue and extends easterly along CR 251 to the intersection with CR 250 and Metz Lane. The project then extends southerly along CR 250 until connecting with previously constructed roadway improvements.

This stretch of roadway is considered a main arterial and experiences some of the higher traffic volumes in Durango. As with many roads in and around Durango, traffic volumes are increasing as are pedestrian and multi-modal travel. As a result, the community has identified the increased benefit of more urban city street amenities along this corridor which will provide for greater traffic safety, aesthetics and accommodations for pedestrians, bikes and multimodal traffic.

The proposed design will maintain a single lane of traffic in each direction, while adding dedicated bike lanes, a shared-use path adjacent to the road, a center landscaped median, improved overall landscaping and the installation of street lights.   Additionally, pedestrian crossing opportunities will be enhanced at the intersections and dedicated left turn lanes will be provided where appropriate. The design will also include accommodations for a future traffic signal at the intersection of E. 32nd St., County Road 250 and Metz Lane.

The new roadway design is intended to resemble the reconstructed sections of nearby Florida Road.

The design project is funded by the Durango and La Plata County Joint Sales Tax Fund. The contract value of the engineered design and surveying is $139,000 and will require approximately nine months to complete. A construction date has yet to be determined.

The joint sales tax is the funding source because the project contains portions of roadway both within and outside city limits. Part of the design contract will include identification of areas along the corridor that may benefit from annexation, as well as areas where easements or right-of-way may need to be gained to construct the improvements.
