Dear Consumer,
You will notice on your Consumer Confidence Report, that the Colorado Department of Health noted a violation by The City of Durango of the State of Colorado Primary Drinking Water Regulations. The violation, classified as a “Failure to Monitor”, refers to a failure to take the required number of monthly samples for Coliform in our distribution system on two occasions.
The number of Coliform monitoring samples required to be taken by a water system is based on the population served. In 2005 the population served by the Durango Community Water System increased to a level requiring additional sampling to meet the State regulations. The increase in sampling did not occur until the month after the report to the State of the increase in population. In a subsequent month, samples were taken on the 31st of the month and analyzed on the 1st of the following month. State regulations require the reporting of the analysis based on the date of the sample, not the date of the analysis. So, for one month in 2005 the City sampled more frequently than required and on the following month the City sampled less frequently than required.
The City of Durango has changed scheduling and administrative review procedures to better assure that sampling frequency meets the requirements of the State regulations.
NO SAMPLES TAKEN DURING THESE TWO PERIODS TESTED POSITIVE FOR COLIFORM BACTERIA.
Thank you,
O. M. Amato
