SOLID WASTE SERVICES
Automated Collection System:
The city of Durango provides poly carts or barrels to its
refuse customers. The container sizes are 60 gallons and 90
gallons Three hundred gallon containers are available for
commercial use only.
Commercial locations wishing to set up a solid waste account
should call the Public Works Department at 375-4800 for information.
Residential users should contact the city's Finance Department,
375-5034.
Containers must be placed in the alley or at curbside by 8:00 a.m. on collection day, with the cart's serial number facing the street or alley. The lids must be closed and no garbage stacked on top or around the container. Garbage or boxes stacked around the container will not be picked up. If
there is not room in the container for all the garbage, customers should make arrangements for a larger container or an additional container. For commercial customers, more pick ups per week may be scheduled.
Poly carts should be rolled back away from alley or street by the customer after being emptied.
Refuse Preparation:
Garbage must be strained of all liquids. Dangerous material (broken glass sharp pieces of metal, etc.) must be securely wrapped to prevent injury to collection crews. No flammable or explosive
or other hazardous materials are allowed. No building materials, sod, rocks, large pieces of metal, concrete blocks or concrete shall be placed out for collection. Landscapers/tree trimmers must dispose of their own debris. No dead animals shall be placed for disposal.
Special Pick Ups:
Residential customers may arrange for a "Special Pick Up" in order to have
tree limbs and other large items collected for disposal. The fee for this service
is $60.00 which entitles
the homeowner to have one dump truck load of refuse taken
away. Any additional loads made necessary by the volume of
refuse will also be charged at $60.00 per load.
Miscellaneous:
During
Spring Clean Up, beginning in mid-April, "brown waste" (tree trimmings, leaves,
etc.) will be picked up at no charge to residential customers. Branches
and brush piles must be no longer than 8 feet. No other waste will
be collected.
During Fall Clean Up, beginning in mid-October,
tree trimmings and other large items will be picked up at
no charge to residential customers. Tree trimmings, brush
and leaves must be separated from other refuse. Scrap metal
should be placed in a third pile for recycling.
