In September 13, 1880, Charles Perin, a civil engineer, surveyed land for a community to serve the D&RG Railroad. Thus Durango was born. On May 30,1881, John Taylor, pioneer druggist and acting Mayor of Durango, laid down a provision for a police department. For over one hundred years, the Durango Police Department has been serving the needs of this growing community.

Through interaction with the community, its citizens and visitors, the Durango Police Department dedicates itself to providing a peaceful, safe and orderly community, performing its duties in a caring and professional manner that promotes open communication.
