Application Form

Purpose
The purpose of the Scholarship Program is to provide opportunities for La Plata County residents of low-income households to participate in recreation programs and facilities at a reduced cost. Youth (17 and under) and Seniors (55 and over) are eligible for the program.

Enrollment Procedures
There are two scholarship & enrollment procedures:

  1. Scholarships issued will be awarded using funds budgeted by the City of Durango and La Plata County and matching payment from the customer. Registrations for these scholarships will be handled on a first-come first-served basis and processed immediately upon approval;
  2. An individual or parent may offer voluntary services in exchange for scholarships which will be handled on an individual basis. Registrations will be processed immediately upon approval.

Scholarship Application & Issuance Guidelines
All Parks and Recreation programs and facilities are partially subsidized by the City. Eligibility for scholarships requires individuals and families to be on a verifiable financial assistance program within La Plata County. Verification is required of participation in one of these financial assistance programs:

  • La Plata County Department of Human Services
      Women’s, Infants, and Children Program
      Food Stamps Program
  • 9-R Free and Reduced Meal Program
  • Medicaid.

Residents must have resided within La Plata County for a minimum of 6 months. Residency may be documented by a driver’s license, voter registration card, or a copy of a lease or utility bill. Prior to a scholarship approval, a scholarship form must be submitted that includes verification of being on a financial assistance program along with 50% of the program registration and/or facility admission cost.

Upon approval, participants are eligible for no more than $200 per household in scholarship funds for programs or facility admissions annually. If an individual registers for additional programs beyond the scholarship guidelines, full payment will be required for those additional programs at the time of registration. All requests for scholarships will be handled on an individual basis by the Parks and Recreation Administrative Office. One scholarship form is required on an annual basis. County scholarship requests are administered by the City and reimbursed by La Plata County. City resident scholarships are reimbursed by the City of Durango.

Scholarship Exemptions
All team-fee programs require full payment and are not eligible for scholarships.
