Recycling Program Update
The City of Durango will begin collecting
plastic materials at the
Recycling Center on Monday, February 27th
The City will begin collecting type 1 and type 2 plastic bottles and jugs on Monday, February 27th at the City’s Recycling Center, located at 710 Tech Center Drive.
The City’s will no longer accept plastic materials at the other public drop-off locations.
- The City will only accept type 1 and type 2 plastic containers at the Recycling Center and in its curbside recycling program.
- To ensure that your plastic bottles and jugs are #1 or #2 type plastics, please reference the triangular recycling symbol on the bottom of the containers.
- Type 1 and type 2 recyclable plastics are typically plastic containers that have openings that are smaller than the base of the containers.
The City of Durango’s Curbside Recycling Program
- To participate in the curbside recycling program, City residents must have a blue, City of Durango curbside recycling container. Curbside recycling containers may be purchased for $19 at City Hall, located at 949 E. 2nd Avenue. Additional containers may be used for curbside recycling as long as they are accompanied by a City issued blue, curbside recycling container.
If you have questions or are interested in signing-up for the City’s curbside recycling program please call 970-375-5004.
Important items to remember while utilizing the City of Durango’s Recycling Program:
Bag your trash NOT your recyclables
The City of Durango CANNOT include chipboard or boxboard in the current recycling process. These products are neither cardboard nor paper.
Packaging materials for the following products are commonly comprised of chipboard or boxboard; as a result, they cannot be recycled: cereal boxes, soda and beer 6-pack containers, waxy milk and juice box containers, noodle or pasta boxes, tissue boxes, tubes from toilet paper and paper towels, laundry detergent boxes, etc.
Please refrain from putting any of the above listed packaging products in your curbside recycling bin or in the bins at the City’s three recycling drop-off locations—behind the North Main City Market, behind Wagon Wheel Liquor, and at the City’s Recycling Center.
Curbside recycling bins need to be stored at least 3 feet away from trash receptacles for proper collection.
- Separating the recycling bins from trash receptacles helps prevent the bins from being tipped over during trash collection.
The City is now contracting with a local company to recycle fluorescent light bulbs.
- Fees to recycle fluorescent light bulbs increased from $.50 for all sized bulbs to $1.00 per four foot tube and $2.00 per eight foot tube and other oddly shaped bulbs. These fees cover the costs associated with recycling the light bulbs.
- The City is no longer accepting commercial quantities of fluorescent tubes. Please call 375-5004 for details and contact information for disposal.
