Residential Curbside Recycling
CURBSIDE COLLECTION - How It Works
If you live in a residential unit other than condominiums or apartments*, the City of Durango offers curbside collection of:
- recyclable paper
- plastic bottles #1 and 2
- glass bottles
- mixed cans
- corrugated cardboard
This service is included free of charge in conjunction with your regular trash collection. To participate in the City's curbside recycling program, City residents must have a blue, City of Durango curbside recycling container. A City of Durango address is required in order to receive a recycling bin.
Guidelines for Participating in the City’s Curbside Recycling Program:
- Curbside recycling containers may be purchased for $19 at City Hall, located at 949 E. 2nd Avenue.
- Curbside recycling bins hold 3 brown paper grocery bags side-by-side for separation and storage of recyclables.
- Double-bagging the paper bags is preferable.
- The use of plastic bags is discouraged as they tear easily and cannot be recycled.
- Additional containers may be used for curbside recycling as long as they are accompanied by a City issued blue, curbside recycling container.
- Townhome complexes may be serviced by larger carts rather than individual bins.
- Place bin (or cart) at least three feet from your trash can next to the curb by 8:00 AM of your usual trash collection day.
- If your trash is normally picked up in the alley, your recyclables must still be placed at the curb.
- If you generate more recyclable material than will fit in the bin, you may set it out in your own containers adjacent to the blue bin.
- Small office trash cans may be used in addition to the blue curbside bin.
- The blue bins must be visible to the truck drivers; they are a cue for City crews to stop at your residence.
If you have questions or are interested in signing-up for the City’s curbside recycling program please call 970-375-5004.
Check our website, the newspaper, the radio, or Channel 10 for public service announcements for any changes in the regular collection times due to holidays or other events.
In order to reduce the number of stops by our recycling crew, please set out the bin only when it is reasonably full.
The City of Durango also offers other recycling services to multi-family (apartment and condominium) complexes and businesses.
* Recycling services are available for apartments and condominiums in the larger recycling bins. Only single-family units (houses, duplexes, and townhouses) have curbside collection in the smaller bins.
