American Red Cross Classes

Water Safety Instructor Class

Learn to teach swim lessons. This American Red Cross class provides a nationally recognized swim instructor certification. Qualified applicants can join the Community Recreation Center instructor team. Seniors and adults are encouraged to apply.

Lifeguard Training Class

The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Class prepares students for work as professional lifeguards. Students are required to pass a swimming test on the first day of class and must be 15 years old by the completion of the class. Students who successfully complete the course are certified in Lifeguarding, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and First Aid. Employment opportunities are available for qualified applicants.


Durango Swim Club

The Durango Swim Club (DGO) is a United States of America Swimming (USA-S) affiliated club team. DGO practices at the Durango Community Recreation Center. The club has called the Recreation Center home since February 2002 and has enjoyed the state-of-the-art 11-lane training facility.

The Durango Swim Club is focused on the betterment of USA-S competitive stroke technique and training. Swimmers consistently compete in the Colorado State Championships, Silver State and Western Slope Championships. Durango is a fast growing team in this part of the country and is beginning to be noticed at large regional and national meets. Many of the Durango swimmers assisted Durango High School win their respective 2007 Western Slope titles. Masters Swimming Program

Masters Swimming is a year-round program consisting of adults, 19 and over, who strive to maintain fitness, train for competitions or wish to meet and compete with other swimmers. The program offers six workouts a week, four early mornings and two evenings, for a total of 8 hours. For more information, please contact Coach Bill Palmer, 259-9153 or Suzanne Schelitz, 779-8643.

Dues are paid directly to the Durango Masters Swim Team. A $35 yearly COMSA competition registration fee is payable to Colorado Masters Swimming Association. These fees do not include entrance into the Recreation Center.

SCUBA Diving

Open a whole new world of adventure! SCUBA diving lessons and open water SCUBA certification for kids and Adults at the Durango Community Recreation Center. For dates and prices see "SCUBA" in our on-line Activities Guide.

Kayaking

Open Kayak Night - Every Tuesday 6:45 - 8:15 p.m.

Come and practice your roll technique and paddle through the "open water" of the lap pool in your kayak.

Open Kayak Night Fees:

Recreation Center Pass Holder $3 per Boat
Persons without a Recreation Center Pass $3 per Boat & $5.75 per person admittance fee
