Community Policing Programs

Community policing is building community partnerships and creative problem solving, and the Durango Police Department emphasizes the community policing philosophy through all phases of its operation.  The Durango Police Department offers numerous programs in an effort to open communication and partnerships with the community.  We recognize that police are not separate from the people and that we derive our authority from the people, yet many members of the community do not have a thorough understanding of our mission and duties.  We offer several programs including the Ride-Along Program  and Citizens' Police Academy that allow the participant to gain insight into how their police department functions.

Chaplaincy Program

The Chaplaincy Program provides the Durango Police Department and community members with emotional and practical support, spiritual guidelines (when requested), ecumenical functions, education, and training.  Its mission is to bring a personal, compassionate touch into a harsh environment.

School Programs

The Durango Police Department dedicates School Resource Officers to work with students at the elementary, middle and high school levels, which helps to establish a dialogue with the younger members of our community. An educational program directed at fifth-grade classes, On TRACK, provides basic information regarding nicotine, drugs and alcohol.

Traffic Unit

Maintaining safe streets and highways is a priority for the Durango Police Department and enforcement action is one way to accomplish this goal.  Unmarked patrol cars, DUI checkpoints and bicycle patrol are among the tools available to officers to increase the safety of the roadways and increase the effectiveness of the circulation.

Ride-Along Program

The Ride-Along program was established for the purpose of acquainting citizens of any age with the Durango Police Department and its officers, by allowing interested persons the opportunity to ride on patrol with a uniformed officer.

Participants under the age of 18 may ride along during daylight hours, or as approved by a parent and approving supervisor up to 11:00 p.m.

Participants must be neat and clean in appearance.  Clothing should be discreetly selected, as participants will be in full view of the public.  Sweatshirts, shorts, faded blue jeans, or other leisure apparel will not be permitted.

Requests should be made at least three business days in advance of the scheduled ride-along.  The Ride-Along Request Form/Waiver and Release must be filled out and signed prior to approval.
