Signs

Regulations for sign permits can be found in the Land Use and Development Code (LUDC) and the Commercial Use Design Guidelines. Permits are required for signs for business uses. Some types of signs may or may not be allowed, or may require permitting, depending on certain criteria, including, but not limited to:

  • signs for banners
  • construction signs
  • directional identification signs
  • real estate signs
  • temporary signs
  • window signs
  • portable signs
  • signs in vehicles
  • home occupation signs
  • no trespassing signs

Regulations in the Commercial Use Design Guidelines supplement those in the LUDC. Applicants for new commercial projects and for properties with multiple tenants should consult the Design Guidelines. The following sources should be consulted for information regarding signage:

Section 10-3 of the LUDC regulates the use of signs in the City of Durango.

Commercial Use Design Guidelines for Signage

Chapter 6 of the Commercial Use Design Guidelines deals exclusively with signage standards. These standards are in addition to those established in the LUDC. The Commercial Use Design Standards are available for purchase at River City Hall, 1235 Camino del Rio, for $15.

Design Guidelines for the Downtown Overlay District

Signs in the Downtown Overlay must comply with the District Guidelines. The Guidelines may be purchased at River City Hall, 1235 Camino del Rio, for $15.
