Florida road reconstruction project

The City of Durango residents approved a construction bond in the fall of 2008 to fund the Florida Road Reconstruction project.  CEI was awarded a design build contract earlier this year to reconstruct Florida Road from E. 3rd Ave./15th St. northeasterly to East Animas/CR 250.  Utility Construction began in late fall of 2009 and will continue through the winter of 2009/2010, weather permitting.  Roadway construction will be done in phases.

The first phase of the project is anticipated to begin in February.  During construction, Florida Road between North College Drive and East 3^rd Avenue will be limited to one-way inbound (westerly) traffic only. Traffic wishing to travel outbound (easterly) will be detoured via 32^nd Street to East Animas Road. Traffic control measures will be in place to direct traffic through and detour around the construction. Motorists are encouraged to drive at an appropriate speed and obey the traffic signs. Concrete Express Incorporated is currently under contract with the City of Durango to construct the roadway.  

When completed, this project will provide safer transportation for cyclists and pedestrians with:

• 5-foot wide concrete bike lanes on both sides of the roadway
• 10-foot wide sidewalk on the north side of the roadway
• signalized pedestrian crossing

The completed project will also make vehicle travel safer with:

• center left turn lanes
• traffic roundabout at the intersection of Riverview Drive
• traffic signal at the intersection of North College Drive

Aesthetic improvements include landscaping trees bordering the roadway, and center landscape islands.

The project is anticipated to be complete the end of 2010.
