The Building Department is a division of the Department of Planning and Community Development, with the chief building inspector overseeing all responsibilities of the department.

The Building Department is responsible for the inspections and permitting of construction and the enforcement of both city and uniform / international codes for private and public development projects located within the City of Durango.

2018 Code Updates
As of January 1, 2018, all new construction for building permit submittals or otherwise must be designed to comply with either the 2015 International Building Code or 2015 International Residential Code.

As of October 1, 2018, all new construction must be designed to comply with the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code. In the Spring of 2018, at an as-yet undetermined date, the City will host an informational session on the details of the 2015 Energy Code. All local builders, contractors and developers are encouraged to attend.
