The City of Durango is taking the following steps to reduce energy consumption to save money and reduce our carbon footprint:

  • 100% of the power that the city purchases is green power through LPEA's Just One Block Program.
  • The City produces 3% of its total power through on-site generation of renewable energy.
  • The City of Durango has been recognized as a Green Power Partner by the EPA and is one of only 37 local government organizations to report 100% green power purchase.
  • Methane gas is converted into electric energy at the City's Wastewater Treatment Plant.
  • The Wastewater Treatment Plant's digester is used to heat water for the building.
  • Synthetic oils that are recovered from the City fleet are used to heat the Maintenance Shop.
  • The City burns fleet-generating waste oil to heat warehouse.
  • Motion-detecting lighting is installed at some City facilities.
  • Purchasing policies encourage the energy efficient office equipment.
  • Lighting is being retrofitted to LED for some City facilities.
  • HVAC systems are updated in yearly budget process.
  • The City utilizes an active energy tracking system for all City facility energy use.
  • Partner in the State Electronic Challenge (SEC) and EPEAT awardee for outstanding achievement in sustainable electronics purchasing
