Planning Related Boards & Commissions
Boards & Commissions
The City of Durango has many boards and commissions, each with specific responsibilities as detailed in the City Charter, the City of Durango Code of Ordinances or the enacting resolution. The City of Durango Planning Department works with the following boards and commissions to make recommendations and decisions about land use, design, and historic preservation. Applications for project review before these boards can be submitted at:

Board of Adjustment
Also known as the Land Use and Development Code Board of Appeals (BOA), reviews appeals specific to all types of land use, zoning, and development planning.

Design Review Board
The Design Review Board (DRB) makes determinations on design issues for the downtown area, the River Corridor Overlay Zone, and for commercial building projects and remodels also including sign permit reviews. This Board also reviews alternative compliance requests specific to the Established Neighborhood Design Standards that are not able to be resolved at the staff level.

Historic Preservation Board
The Historic Preservation Board (HPB) reviews nominations to the Durango Historic Register, reviews alterations to historic structures, provides help to property owners with historic structures, develops programs to enhance historic preservation in the city, and provides public education.

Planning Commission
The Planning Commission makes recommendations to City Council as determined by the requirements of the Land Use and Development Code including, but not limited to, planned developments, annexations, plats, conditional use permits, parking variances, and amendments to the Land Use and Development Code (LUDC), and Comprehensive Plan. Planning Commission also reviews appeals of certain land use decisions.
