Commercial Recycling
Commercial Recycling Program
The City of Durango offers commercial single stream recycling services for businesses located within the city limits. Any business that is currently receiving City water or sewer services may sign up for the City’s commercial recycling program. The City offers discounted commercial recycling rates to businesses that subscribe to the City’s garbage collection services.

The City collects the following items in its commercial recycling program:
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Mixed glass
  • Mixed cans
  • Cartons
  • Mixed paper
  • Number 1 through #7 plastics
  • Paperboard

Collection Containers
The City provides collection containers to the businesses that participate in the commercial recycling program. A separate container is required for cardboard and glass, all other products can be combined in one container. The collection containers may not be stored within public rights of way without permission from the City Operations Department, and require 3 feet of clearance on either side and behind the container for our automated collection system.

For single stream material and glass, the city provides blue plastic collection containers similar to those used for garbage collection. For corrugated cardboard, the city provides blue rectangular metal recycling dumpsters. All of the City’s commercial recycling containers are serviced with fully-automated equipment.

Commercial Recycling Collection Schedule
City staff is available to meet with building owners, renters, and/or employees for a brief orientation prior to beginning the program in order to review the list of acceptable materials, guidelines for participating in the program, how to properly prepare recyclables, and collection schedules and times. Please call (970) 375-5004 to set up an appointment.

  • Commercial recycling containers need to be ready for service by 6:00 a.m. on collection days. If you use a locking mechanism to prevent contamination, please unlock the container prior to your scheduled service.
  • Substantial amounts of shredded paper should be bagged.
  • Collection within each building is the responsibility of the owner or tenant.
