Biography

Dick White was a professor of astronomy at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, for 28 years.  He affiliated with Environmental Science and Policy Program at Smith in the 1990s, and developed course on the science and policy of global warming that he taught three times between 1995 and 2001. He took early retirement from teaching in 2002 as a step toward a new career as a sustainability advocate.

After moving to Durango in 2003, he helped to organize the Sustainability of Southwest Colorado, which he served as founding Board Chair.  He also has served on the boards of the Southwest Colorado Renewable Energy Society, the Oakhaven Permaculture Center, and the La Boca Center for Sustainability.  Dick was a member of the citizen working group for the La Plata County Comprehensive Plan and he chaired a work group and served on the Steering Committee for the La Plata County Climate and Energy Action Plan.  He continues as a member of the BP Citizens Advisory Panel.

Dick received his B.S. from St. Joseph's College (IN) and a Ph.D. in astronomy from Columbia University (NY).  He is a member of the Hillcrest Golf Club and plays basketball at the Durango Community Recreation Center.  He also enjoys hiking and bird watching with his wife, Faye Schrater.
