The primary function of the Department of Planning and Community Development is the planning, development, review and inspection of private and public development projects. The department administers the Comprehensive Plan and the Land Use Development Code, and develops area and topical
plans. It also performs policy analysis, data management, and program administration (sign code, housing, historic preservation, design review, etc.).
The Building Inspection Division administers the International Codes (I-Codes)
published by the International Code Council.
In keeping with Durango's ongoing commitment to historic preservation, the Historic Preservation Board applies for and receives grants to restore and repair historic structures. Through surveys, the Board is able to identify significant structures in the community that need restoration.
