PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: Arts & Economic Prosperity 5

The National Endowment for the Arts conducted an Arts and Economic Prosperity Study in the City of Durango. The results were outstanding! In 2015, non-profit and public arts and cultural organizations contributed over $18 million to the local economy.  Twenty-six of the eligible 34 non-profit arts and cultural organizations participated in this study and a total of 556 audience surveys were completed. Durango consistently performed better than other cities of a similar sizes. The study collected data about direct expenditures in Durango by the organizations and by their audiences and also calculated the indirect impacts on jobs, taxes and income.  Community Development Staff will provide a presentation on the Arts & Economic Prosperity Study at the August 22, 2017 City Council Study Session. For the full report go to http://durangogov.org/DocumentCenter/View/8597.

  • Ross at the Durango Mall received their Certificate of Occupancy (CO) from the City, and the store is now open.
  • The 1304 Florida Road Apartments are close to getting a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) from the City.  They will have 20-units within 2 separate buildings.

Development Review Project Submittals:

Below is a list of the major development review projects that were submitted for review in July:

Durango Districts Initiative Update:

Community Development staff will be presenting information to City Council on the status of the North Main and Camino del Rio Character Districts as well as provide a presentation on the Arts & Economic Prosperity Study and Creative Districts at the August 22, 2017 Study Session at 4:00pm in City Council Chambers.  Draft 3D models of the corridors have been built to display the feedback we received from the public process last year.  Public review drafts of the Character District plans will be released in early Fall.  The plans will include a summary of the public input received; they will identify opportunity sites for infill development and public spaces; and include strategies to enhance the corridors.  For more info, visit the website: https://districts.durangogov.org/

  • The City’s Code Enforcement Officers have responded to over 190 Bear/Trash complaints so far this summer.  Many of the complaints have resulted in property owners being required to upgrade to wildlife resistant trash containers.  Code Enforcement Officers have taken on more pro-active measures in neighborhoods with higher bear/trash issues, including posting information notices and using social media to inform residence of the City trash and recycling regulations.  For more info, visit www.durangogov.org/wildlife or call (970)375-5004.

  • In a joint effort with the La Plata County Economic Development Alliance, the City of Durango has been selected to proceed to the next round of interviews to become a Certified Small Business Community.  This is a great program as it creates funding and grant opportunities for the communities to support local businesses.

  • The Community Development Department hosted two workshops in June, in collaboration with the Colorado State Archaeologist, Dr. Holly Norton, and the Southern Ute NAGPRA Coordinator, Cassandra Naranjo. The morning workshop was for local governments and the afternoon workshop was for the general public. The goal of the workshops was to demystify regulatory requirements and provide information about support for archaeological investigations or preservation on both public and private property.
